Summer comes to the Methow 05/24/2009
Summer has come with the tourists to the Methow. Yesterday, Micheal and I went to the Twisp Farmers Market, expecting to see the usual handful of craftspeople, plus a few hardy gardening types selling starter plants. After all, it froze again one night this week; most farmers are keeping their plants in frames or greenhouses til the soil warms a bit more. Instead, we found a mob of people thronging vendors of garden-fresh lettuces, endive, freshly baked breads and pies, herbal vinegars, lavendar-infused oils, calendual creams, wheat-grass juice, grass-fed beef, free-range chicken eggs, fresh-cut lilacs, tulips, apple blossoms, and rhododendron...an incredible bounty of delights despite a delayed start to "the season." Plus, live jug-band music and handicrafts ranging from birdhouses painted by kindergardeners to raise money for their school garden to sheepskin rugs to handcrafted furniture. It was a beautiful, clear warm day and people were so happy to be out with the sun, each other, and the fruits of their labors.
